Tips for your reference photo

Better photos = better drawings.

  1. 1

    One subject per photo.

We draw what's in focus — too much in frame and the etching loses its line.

  2. 2

    Daylight beats indoor.

Side-light shows shape. Flat indoor light flattens detail.

  3. 3

    Step back.

Whole-subject shots work better than close-ups for our line style.

  4. 4

    Multiple angles help.

Up to 4 photos. Different sides of a boat, different times of day for a landmark.

  5. 5

    Skip the filters.

Send the raw camera-roll JPEG. We're working from the line, not the colour.

  6. 6

    Older photos are fine.

Charcoal sketches, old photographs, even a description-only brief works.

Ready when you are.
